ถ้าท่านทำมักง่าย ก็เท่ากับทำลายสิ่งที่ท่านกำลังอยู่นั่นเอง.
Acting carelessly is like destroying what you’re doing.

เครื่องแต่งตัวและเนื้อตัวที่สะอาด มิได้หมายความว่าใจจะสะอาดด้วยเสมอไป ดังนั้นอย่าดูกันภายนอก.
Clean clothes and a clean body do not always mean that the heart is pure. Don’t look at appearances.

เขาพูดกันว่า คนค้าขายต้องพูดเท็จ แต่เราเห็นคนไม่ค้าขายบางคน พูดเท็จมากกว่าเสียอีก.
They say that merchants are liars, but we see some people who are not merchants and lie even more.

บางคนยกยอใคร ก็เพียงเพื่อให้เขายกยอตัว เป็นผลตอบแทนกลับมา.
Some people flatter others only for being flattered in turn as a reward.

อันธพาล คือผู้ชอบเผชิญความชั่ว วิ่งหนีความดี ยิ่งกว่าหนูวิ่งหนีแมว.
Rogues are people who like to face evil but run away from the good faster than mice from a cat.

เต่ากินกล้วยหมดทั้งเปลือกเป็นธรรมดา จึงไม่ถูกด่าจากคนที่เหยียบและลื่นล้ม, คนทุกวันเลวกว่าเต่า.
Turtles normally eat bananas with the peel and thus are not cursed by people who slip on peels and fall. Every day people are worse than turtles.

ระวัง! การกินดีอยู่ดี มีอันตรายมากกว่าการกินอยู่แต่พอดี นี้คือกฎธรรมชาติสากล.
Be careful! A happy life has many more perils than a moderate life, this is a universal law of nature. [Literally, “eating well has many more perils than eating moderately,” the image of eating well being used in Thai as a symbol for a happy, comfortable life.]

สิ่งที่เป็นธรรมดาสามัญ นั่นแหละเลิศ สิ่งที่ยิ่งผิดธรรมดา จะยิ่งเป็นปัญหาและความทุกข์.
What is ordinary is excellent; what is off the ordinary is a cause of much trouble and pain.

การศึกษามิใช่เป็นการเรียนๆท่องๆ แต่เป็นการเห็นอย่างถูกต้องและสมบูรณ์ด้วยตนเอง.
To study is not to cram one’s head with books and learn by rote but to observe accurately and thoroughly by oneself.

รัฐบาลมี ๒ ชนิด : ทำพลเมืองให้เป็นคน และทำพลเมืองให้เป็นมนุษย์.
There are two types of governments: governments that make men and governments that make humans. [Cf. Proverbs V for the proverbial difference between man (kon) and human (manoot).]

ในโบสถ์ทีมีแต่การสอนให้อ้อนวอน นั้นมิใช่โบสถ์ของพระเจ้าที่แท้จริง.
The temple which only teaches to beseech is not a true temple of the divine.

ในโบสถ์หรือพระพุทธรูปยิ่งสำคัญหรือศักดิ์สิทธิ์เท่าใด ก็ยิ่งมีเซียมซีมากเท่านั้น.
The more prominent or revered a temple or shrine, the more oracles are practiced there. [This is a criticism. The word used for “oracle” is siamsi, which designates fortunetelling practices that originated in Chinese pagodas and extended to Buddhist temples over time.]

สัตว์ที่พระเจ้าเลี้ยงไม่รู้จักเชื่อง ก็คือสัตว์มนุษย์นั่นเอง.
An animal which its tutelar divinity does not know how to tame, this is the human being.

สุนัขและแมวพูดภาษาคนไม่ได้ แต่รู้จักใจเจ้าของดีกว่าคนที่พูดภาษาคนด้วยกันได้.
Dogs and cats do not speak people’s language, but they know their owners’ heart better than people who speak the same language as the owners.

ตื่นตูมง่ายเหมือนกระต่าย ก็ได้เป็นมนุษย์กระต่าย ที่กำลังมีอยู่ทั่วโลกยุคปัจจุบัน.
Easily panic-stricken like rabbits, rabbit men are found all over the world in this age.

ผึ้ง–มด–ปลวก รู้จักเลือกนางพญาอย่างสำเร็จประโยชน์ นับว่าเป็นต้นตอแห่งประชาธิปไตยยิ่งกว่ามนุษย์.
Bees, ants, and termites know how to choose queens to their advantage. They are possibly a truer source of democracy than human beings.

ปลาเล็ก ย่อมเป็นเหยื่อแก่ปลาใหญ่ เว้นเสียแต่มันจะได้เข้าถึงพระเจ้าอย่างแท้จริง.
The small fish is a prey for the big fish, unless it can find a way to the true God.

ความอดทนมีมากเท่าใด ปัญญาของใครจะมีประโยชน์แก่เขามากเท่านั้น.
The more patience, the more profit one’s wisdom to oneself.

ของเน่าบางชนิดออกฤทธิ์เป็นของหอม แต่มันก็ยังเป็นของเน่าอยู่นั่นเอง, ระวัง!
Some rotten things happen to smell good, but they are rotten all the same, be careful!

คำว่า สามี แปลว่า นาย แต่นายชนิดนี้ส่วนมากเป็นทาสของภรรยา.
The word husband means master, but this kind of master is often a slave to his wife.

แปลก! นักเมืองที่คอรัปชั่น ฉ้อราษฎร์บังหลวง โกงกินสารพัด ก็ยังได้ชื่อว่านักการเมือง ไม่มีคำอื่นจะเรียก.
How strange! The corrupt politician who embezzles public funds and eats up the country is still called a politician, there’s no other word.

การทำบาปเลวร้าย สิ้นสุดลงพร้อมกับสิ้นชีวิต แต่ผลของมันยังเหลืออยู่ สำหรับแสดงบทบาทอีกต่อไป.
Sin and evil end with death, but the outcome stays for the same part to be played again.

นักการเมืองบริสุทธิ์ ไม่ทำเพื่อตัว–เพื่อเงิน–เพื่ออภิสิทธิ์ แต่เพื่อความเป็นธรรม หรือเพื่อหน้าที่.
Authentic politicians do not act for themselves, for money, nor for privileges, they act for justice or out of a sense of duty.

ทาสที่ได้รับความทรมานมากที่สุด คือทาสแห่งความรัก หรือทาสทางใจ.
The slave who gets the cruelest torments is the slave to love or mental slave.

กฎหมาย มิใช่สร้างโดยพระเจ้า หรือเทวดา จึงมีส่วนแห่งความพลั้งเผลอของผู้สร้างบ้าง.
Laws are not made by gods or angels, and they suffer from their makers’ carelessness.

มากเกินไปก็เกินดี น้อยเกินไปก็ไม่ถึงดี พอดีๆนั่นแหละคือถึงที่สุด.
Too much is too much, not enough is not enough, just enough is the highest good.

หลังคารั่ว ย่อมเดือดร้อนตลอดฤดูฝน–หนาว–แล้ว ทั้งสามฤดู มิใช่หรือ.
A leaky roof suffers in the rainy season, the cold season, and the hot season, all three seasons, does it not?

นอนกับแกะ แล้วจะไม่ให้มีกลิ่นเหมือนแกะนั้น มันจะเป็นไปได้อย่างไร.
To sleep with sheep and not have the smell of sheep on oneself, how is it possible?

นักแม่นปืน อย่าเพ่ออวดดี เพราะในบางกรณี ท่านก็อาจยิงผิดได้.
Don’t boast yet, sharpshooter, as you may still miss the mark.

เสียงประชาชนมิใช่เสียงสวรรค์เสมอไป : เป็นเสียงนรกก็ได้เมื่อไรก็ศีลธรรม.
The vox populi is not always the sound of heaven: it can be the sound of hell, absent morality.

การกินเมืองโกงเมือง ก็ยังเป็นเรื่องของนักการเมือง ยังไม่หนีไปไหน.
To eat up the country through embezzlement, this is a politicians’ thing that won’t go away.

หลีกอันธพาล เป็นการสมควร, สู้กับอันธพาล เป็นการเกินควร เพราะเท่ากับแพ้แล้วแต่ก่อนลงมือสู้.
Avoiding rogues is the thing to do, not engaging in fight with them, as the fight is lost before it begins.

ความเข้าใจผิด เป็นบ่อเกิดของการพูดผิด ทำผิด แล้วก็ถึงความพินาศ.
Misunderstanding is the source of bad talk, wrongdoing, and then destruction.

อย่าดูถูกเงินจำนวนน้อยๆ โดยข้อเท็จจริงแล้ว มันเป็นที่มาอันแท้จริง ของเงินจำนวนมหาศาล.
Don’t look down upon small amounts of money, they’re the true source of colossal fortunes.

อย่าดูถูกเงินอัฐเงินฬส มันจะทำให้หมดเงินร้อยชั่งพันชั่ง อย่าสะเพร่ากันในข้อนี้.
Don’t look down upon red cents, it is what ends up being hundreds and thousands. Don’t neglect it.

การไม่รับเมื่อสมควรรับ นับว่ายังน่าเกลียดน้อยกว่าการรับเมื่อไม่สมควรจะรับ.
To get not when one should get is still less ugly than to get when one should not.

ความกลัว หรือความกล้า ถ้ามีมากเกินไป ก็ย่อมให้เกิดผลร้ายได้เสมอกัน.
Too much fear or too much courage, both always have adverse consequences.

ทำตัวเองให้เจริญ นั่นแหละคือทำชาติให้เจริญ เพราะชาติก็คือเราทุกคนรวมกัน.
To improve oneself is what makes the nation improve, because the nation is all of us together.

คำพูดแสนดีประโยชน์ แต่ถ้ามากเกินไปก็กลายเป็นไม่ดีมีโทษขึ้นมาได้.
To speak well is advantageous but too much will be disadvantageous.

ฉลาดเสียอย่างเดียว จะเป็นผู้ท่องเที่ยวหรือไม่ท่องเที่ยว ก็สามารถเก็บความรู้เพิ่มขึ้นได้ทุกวัน.
Being smart, whether he travels around or not, he knows how to increase his knowledge every day.

สุนัข คลุมด้วยหนังราชสีห์ ก็บันลือสีหนาทไม่ได้ คงได้แต่หอนอย่างหมาเหมือนเดิม.
The dog clothed in the lion’s hide cannot roar like the king of animals and only barks as before.

ความซื่อสัตย์ต่อหน้า ต่างกันอย่างดินกับฟ้าเมื่อนำมาเทียบกับความซื่อสัตย์ลับหลัง.
Integrity in front of people, the difference is the same as between earth and sky, when compared with unwitnessed integrity.

ระบบการคัดเลือกคนดีด้วยการมีรางวัลให้นั้น ยังไม่อาจสร้างสรรค์คนดีที่แท้จริง, นอกจากทารกดี.
The system that picks good people with rewards is not able to create good people still, except from good infants.

คนทำชั่วโดยมากเพราะไม่รู้จักความชั่ว หรือมิฉะนั้นก็เพราะคิดว่าจะไม่มีใครรู้เห็น.
In general people do evil either because they don’t know it is evil or because they think no one will see.

เพื่อนกินหาง่าย ก็เพราะว่าคนส่วนมากชอบกินด้วยกันทั้งนั้น มันจึงหาง่าย.
Fair-weather friends are easy to find because most people prefer lunching in company. [A play on words: “fair-weather friend” or “false friend” in Thai is literally friend for lunch.]

เมื่อพูดกันโดยภาษาไทย คนมีเมียน้อย นั่นแหละคือคนมีเมียมาก.
In Thai, a man with a lot of women is called a man with few women. [A mistress in Thai is literally a “small woman,” mia-noi, which can also means, depending on phrasing, “few women.” Literally, the proverb says that a man with mistresses is called a man with a lot of women, but as it contrasts mia-noi with mia-mak, “a lot of women,” the parallelism appears as the contradiction between few and a lot of women.]

สุนัข แม้จะเป็นของพระยาเลี้ยง เศรษฐีเลี้ยง หรือต่อให้ทวดาเลี้ยง ก็ยังกินอุจจาระของคนขอทานได้.
A dog, even when owned and fed by a lord, or by a rich man, or even by an angel, might still eat beggars’ feces.

การลอบทำร้ายลับหลัง มิใช่วิธีของคนขลาดอย่างเดียว แต่มันมีอยู่ในตำราพิชัยสงครามของคนกล้าหาญด้วยกัน.
Doing harm on the sly is not only the way of the coward but is also found in the military treatises of the bold.

คนดี หรือคนไม่ดี ก็ล้วนแต่ประสงค์ให้ใครๆเข้าใจว่าตนดีด้วยกันทั้งนั้น.
Good guys like bad guys all want people to think they are good.

มีทรัพย์ชนิดใดก็ได้ มากแล้ว ก็มีผู้มาจู๋จี๋มาก ถ้าไม่มีเลย ก็ไม่มีใครมาเลย.
When one has wealth, a lot of people come to talk to him affectionately; when not, no one pays a visit.

ชีวิตก็ยังต้องมีเครื่องมือ คือจิตสำหรับคิด มือสำหรับทำ ปากสำหรับพูด ระวังใช้ให้ถูกต้อง.
Life needs tools, mind to think, hand to do, mouth to speak: use them as befits each of them.

ความฉลาด ถ้าอยู่กับคนเลว ก็จะช่วยให้เขาเลวลึก เลวอย่างประณีตสุขุม ยิ่งขึ้นไปอีก.
When intelligence mixes with evil, it serves to makes it much deeper, more elaborate and cold-blooded.
