One of the ten families of elephants, namely: 1 Galawaga-Hati (black elephant); 2 Dangkai-Hati (colour like that of running water); 3 Pantara-Hati (silver white); 4 Tamop-Hati (copper); 5 Pingkon-Hati (pale gold, like a cat’s eye); 6 Kanta-Hati (colour of eaglewood, and the elephant emanates a sweet fragrance); 7 Mongkon-Hati (colour of blue pea vine, and its motions are graceful); 8 Hem-Hati (yellow like gold); 9 Ubosot-Hati (golden); 10 Chattan-Hati (pure white like smolten silver, but mouth and feet are red). / Other definition: The ten families of elephants in the Triphum [cosmology scriptures] are: 1 black elephant; 2 elephant born in the Ganges; 3 albino elephant; 4 red elephant; 5 yellow elephant; 6 fragrant elephant; 7 graciously moving elephant; 8 gold-yellow elephant; 9 golden elephant; 10 king of elephants. [As one can see, the two lists are only partially concurring. Furthermore, the first list does not mention any legendary aspect in these elephant families, as if they were applying to real world elephants. Although the colours ascribed to some of these elephants may seem rather odd, the system could well serve to distinguish different skin nuances of elephants from the real world. The second source, however, indicates that these elephants are mythical.]

กิงบุรุษ. สัตว์ชนิดหนึ่งในนิยาย ตัวเป็นม้า หัวเป็นคน แต่ตามคติไทยว่า เป็นอมนุษย์พวกหนึ่งอยู่ในป่าหิมพานต์ ท่อนล่าง เป็นนก ท่อนบนเป็นคน. Kingburut. A legendary animal having the body of a horse and a human face. In Thai folklore, however, it is a creature with the lower half being of a bird, the upper half of a man, and living in Himmapan forest [the forest surrounding Mount Meru, which is, in Hindu mythology, the sacred mountain at the centre of the universe]. กินนร. อมนุษย์ในนิยาย มี ๒ ชนิด ชนิดหนึ่งเป็นครึ่งคนครึ่งนก ท่อนบนเป็นคน ท่อนล่างเป็นนก อีกชนิดหนึ่งมีรูปร่างเหมือนคน เมื่อจะไปไหนมาไหน ก็ใส่ปีกใส่หางบินไป. Kinnon. A legendary creature of which two different species exist, one being half-bird and half-human (upper part human, lower part bird-like), the other having a man-like appearance and a flying motion with wings and tail. กินรี. กินนรเพศหญิง. Kinari. A female kinnon. [According to some other definitions than those given here, kinnon is the generic name, kinari the female, and kingburut the male.]

แก้วสารพัดนึก. แก้วที่เชื่อกันว่า ถ้าผู้ใดมีอยู่แล้ว นึกอะไรได้อย่างใจ. Keow-Sanpat-Neuk. “Wish crystal,” a magic crystal enabling its owner to realize his or her wishes.

ขษีณาศรพ. ผู้สิ้นกิเลสแล้ว หมายถึง พระอรหันต์ (สก. สิ้นไป + กิเลส). Ka-Si-Nasop. A person beyond desire, i.e. an arahant (awakened), a Buddhist saint. (from Sanskrit: beyond desire).

คันธกุฎี. กุฎีที่มีกลิ่นหอม หมายถึง หมู่กุฎีที่สร้างขึ้นเป็นพิเศษสำหรับเป็นที่ประทับของพระพุทธเจ้าที่เชตวัน ตัวคันธกุฎีได้สร้างแยกไว้ต่างหาก ส่วนสิ่งก่อสร้างอื่นที่เห็นเด่นชัดเรียกว่า บริเวณคันธกุฎี. Kantakuti. “Perfumed cell”; the cell that was built as a residence for the Buddha in Jetavana (India).

ครุฑี. ครุฑตัวเมีย. Krutee. A female garuda. (The garuda is the legendary birdlike creature that serves as heraldic emblem of Thailand.)

ฉัททันต์. ๑ ชื่อช้างตระกูล ๑ ใน ๑๐ ตระกูลเรียกว่า ฉัททันตหัตถี กายสีขาวบริสุทธิ์ดั่งสีเงินยวง แต่ปากและเท้าสีแดง. ๒ ชื่อสระใหญ่สระ ๑ ในสระทั้ง ๗ ในป่าหิมพานต์. Chattan. 1 One of the ten families of elephants (see Galawaga). 2 A large pond among the seven ponds of Himmapan forest.

ฉัพพรรณรังสี. รัศมี ๖ ประการ คือ ๑ สีนีละ (สีเขียวเหมือนดอกอัญชัน คือสีน้ำเงินนั่นเอง) ๒ สีปีตะ (สีเหลืองเหมือนหรดาลทอง) ๓ สีโรหิตะ (สีแดงเหมือนแสงตะวันอ่อน) ๔ สีโอทาตะ (สีขาวเงินยวง) ๕ สีมัญเชฏฐะ (สีแสดเหมือนหงอนไก่) ๖ สีประภัสสร (สีเลื่อมพรายเหมือนแก้วผลึก). คือสีที่แผ่ออกจากพระวรกายขององค์สมเด็จพระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า. ธงฉัพพรรณรังสี. ธงศาสนาพุทธ. Chappana-Rangsi. A light of six colours, namely: blue like the flower of the aloes (butterfly pea, blue pea vine), yellow like golden realgar, red like a setting sun, white like a silver plate, orange (“swan’s leg”) like the flower of the Chinese burr or like a chicken comb, and shiny like a crystal. This is the halo emanating from Buddha’s body. Tong-Chappana-Rangsi. “The Six-Colors Beam Flag”: the Buddhist religion’s flag.

ชินาลัย. ที่อยู่ของพระพุทธเจ้า. Chinalay. Abode of the Buddha.

ตบะ. “ความเพียรเครื่องเผาผลาญกิเลส” คือ พิธีข่มกิเลสโดยทรมานตัว. ข้อปฏิบัติ ของพระพุทธศาสนา หมายถึงการทำความเพียรเพื่อกำจัดกิเลสออกจากจิต การรักษาศีล การทำสมาธิ การรักษาธุดงค์ ฯลฯ เป็นตบะทั้งสิ้นความอดทนอย่า. Tapa. “Penance”, i.e. the suppression of desire through physical mortification. In Buddhist religion, it means the evacuation of desire from the mind through the practice of religious precepts, meditation, patience, tudong [taking the road as a form of merit-making and other monk practices], etc.

ทองพระขุน. ขุนเพ็ด, ปลัดขิก,อ้ายขิก. รูปอวัยวะอันเป็นองค์กำเนิดของชาย, รูปของลับของชาย. Tong-Pra-Kun, or Kun-Pet, or Palat-Kik, or Ay-Kik. A carved figure of the masculine genitals [serving as amulet].

ทัณฑิมา. ชื่อนกในพวกสัตว์หิมพานต์ รูปเป็นครุฑถือกระบอง. / ชื่อนกในนิยาย หัวเป็นนกตัวเป็นครุฑ ถือไม้เท้าอยู่ในป่าหิมพานต์. Tantima. A bird in Himmapan forest having the appearance of a garuda holding a club. Other definition: A legendary bird in Himmapan having a birdlike head and the body of a garuda, and holding a staff.

ทางใน. การหยั่งรู้ด้วยพลังจิต โดยปริยายหมายถึงการนึกเดาเอาเอง. Tang-Nai. “The Inner Way,” the foreseeing of things to come through mental exertion; in the figurative sense it means a correct guess.

ทานพ, ทานา. ภูตจำพวกหนึ่ง ซึ่งกล่าวว่าเป็นแทตย์หรืออสูร เป็นศัตรูต่อพวก เทวดา กล่าวว่าเป็นลูกของนางทนุ และพระกัศยป มีจำนวน ๔๐ บ้าง ๑๐๐ บ้าง. Tanop, or Tana. A kind of demons, daityas or asuras, enemies of the devas; they are said to be the offspring of Mother Nang Tanu and Father Pra Katsayop, and number either 40 or 100.

โทหฬะ. ๑ ความปรารถนาของหญิงตั้งครรภ์ ๒ ความแพ้ท้อง. Tohala. 1 Desires of a pregnant woman. 2 Morning sickness (in pregnancy).

ธไนศวรรย์. อิสรภาพเหนือทรัพย์. Tanaisawan. Freedom from riches.

บังสุกุล. เรียกผ้าที่พระภิกษุชักจากศพ หรือที่ทอดไว้หน้าศพ. Bangsukun. The garment worn by a monk, taken from a corpse over which it was laid.

ปลุกผี. นั่งบริกรรมคาถาจนกระทั่งผีลุกขึ้นมาหรือปรากฏกาย เพื่อใช้ให้ไปทําประโยชน์ตามที่ตนปรารถนา หรือเพื่อลนเอานํ้ามันจากคางผีตายทั้งกลมที่เรียกกันว่า น้ำมันพราย สำหรับดีดให้หญิงหลงรัก. Pluk-Pi. “Call the Ghost,” to recite incantations until a ghost materializes, in order to make it act according to one’s wishes; or to collect oil from the body of a woman who died while in pregnancy, used to make women fall in love.

ปลุกพระ. บริกรรมคาถาเสกพระเครื่องเพื่อให้เกิดความขลัง. Pluk-Pra. “Call the Blessed,” to recite incantations upon an amulet in order to activate its magic.

ไปศาจี. ๑ ภาษาของผี. ๒ เป็นชื่อภาษาหนึ่งในอินเดีย. Paisatjee. 1 The language of ghosts. 2 A certain language in India.

ผีดิบ. ๑ ศพที่ยังไม่ได้เผา. ๒ ผีที่ยังไม่ได้เผา. Pi-Dip. 1 An uncremated body. 2 Ghost of an uncremated body; undead.

พระผอม, หลวงพ่อผอม. พระพุทธเจ้ารูปปางบำเพ็ญทุกรกิริา. Pra-Pom, or Luang-Po-Pom. Emaciated Buddha, a Buddha image showing the Buddha practising self-mortification.

พระรอด. ชื่อพระเครื่องชนิดหนึ่งของลําพูน. Pra-Rot. An amulet of a kind from the province of Lamphun. [This is the only case I know of a geographical origin for a type of amulet.]

พิสมร. เครื่องรางชนิดหนึ่งรูปสามเหลี่ยมหรือสี่เหลี่ยม ร้อยสาย สำหรับป้องกันอันตราย ม้วนร้อยสลับกับตะกรุด. Pitsamon. An amulet in triangle or square form, made of thread, and used to ward off danger. Can be strung together with takrut. [For a definition of the takrut, and of other amulets, see also my Thai-French Glossaire here]

พุทธังกูร. หน่อพระพุทธเจ้า คือผู้ที่จะได้เป็นพระพุทธเจ้าในภายภาคหน้า. Puttankun. A Buddha child, i.e. a person who will be Buddha in the future.

พุทธันดร. เวลาระหว่างพระพุทธเจ้าองค์หนึ่งกับอีกองค์หนึ่งบังเกิดขึ้น. Puttangon. The time span between one living Buddha and the birth of the next.

มรณภาพ. ความตาย, ตาย (ใช้แก่พระสงฆ์). ex. ชาวพุทธมีความเชื่อว่าพระสงฆ์ที่มรณภาพทั้งผ้าเหลือง จะไปเกิดเป็นพระภูมิเจ้าที่. Moranapap. To die, or death (used for monks). Ex. Buddhists believe that monks who die in their yellow robes will be born as guardian spirits (pra-pum).

มหาธาตุ. พระอัฐิธาตุของพระพุทธเจ้า พระบรมธาตุ หรือ พระบรมสารีริกธาตุ ก็เรียก . เรียกพระสถูปเจดีย์หรือพระปรางค์ที่บรรจุพระบรมธาตุ ว่า มหาธาตุ. Mahatat. A relic of the Buddha. Shrines or pagodas that enclose such relics are called relics temples (wat-mahatat).

มหาอุจ. ดาวพระเคราะห์ที่ทรงคุณสูงเด่น ทําให้เจ้าดวงชะตามีความเจริญรุ่งเรือง. Mahaoot. A planet that confers eminent benefits and makes one’s fate successful.

เมรุพระบุพโพ. เมรุขนาดน้อย สำหรับถวายพระเพลิงพระบุพโพ (น้ำเหลือง) ส่วนใหญ่จะทำที่วัดมหาธาตุ ฯลฯ (ศัพท์พระราชพิธี) Meru-Bup-Po. A small size crematory that serves to cremate the lymph (“yellow water”), mostly used in relics temples (royal ceremonies vocabulary).

ระลึกชาติ. ระลึกถึงความเป็นไปในชาติก่อน. Raleuk-Chat. “Life-Recall,” to remember former lives.

ลองของ. ทดลองดูว่าเครื่องรางของขลังนั้นจะขลังจริงหรือไม่. Long-Kong. To test whether the power of an amulet is effective or not.

วนัปติ. ไม้ใหญ่, พญาไม้, ผีเจ้าป่า. Wanapa. A big tree. A banyan tree, lit. “king of trees.” A spirit of the forest.

ศรภ, ศรภะ. สัตว์ในนิยาย ถือกันว่า มี ๘ เท้า มีแรงมากกว่าช้างและสิงโต. Sarapa. A legendary animal believed to have eight feet and more strength than the elephant and the lion.

สมผุส, สัมผุส. การคำนวณหาองศาทางโหราศาสตร์เกี่ยวกับโลกและดาวพระเคราะห์เล็งร่วมกัน. Somput, or Samput. Astrological computation (evaluating conjunctions between the earth and other planets). [Monks practice it.]

สมพงศ์. การร่วมวงศ์หรือตระกูลกัน (โหร) วิธีคํานวณว่าหญิงชายที่จะเป็นคู่ครองกันมีชะตาต้องกันหรือไม่. / คำนวณวัน เดือน ปีเกิดคู่หญิงชายว่าจะอยู่กินเป็นสุขหรือไม่. Sompong. An astrological practice intended to determine whether a man and woman who are to marry have concurring fates or not. / An astrological examination of the birth dates of future spouses in order to determine whether their home life will be happy. [Monks practice it.]

สะลาบ. ผิวของพิมพ์หล่อพระที่แตกออกเป็นกาบเล็ก ๆ เมื่อความร้อนลดลงกะทันหัน. Salap. Small peels that burst out from the mold of an amulet when heat decreases abruptly.

สาลิกา. ชื่อเครื่องรางชนิดหนึ่ง เป็นตะกรุดดอกเล็กๆ อมไว้ในปาก ว่ามีสรรพคุณทำให้คนรัก. Salika. An kind of amulet, which is a takrut of very small size kept in the mouth and believed to make people fall in love with the owner.

สินี. นางผู้มีเนื้อขาว, นางงาม. Sini. A white-skinned woman, a beautiful woman. [The word “fair” in English conveys same both meanings.]

สุธาสินี. ผู้กินอาหารทิพย์ คือ เทวดา. สุธา. น้ำทิพย์, น้ำอมฤต, อาหารทิพย์. Sutasini. One that eats preternatural viands, i.e. a deva. From Suta. Preternatural water, amrit water, ambrosia.

เสกเป่า. Sek-Pao. “Blow the magic,” to consecrate something by breathing on it after pronouncing a religious formula.

โสสานิกะ. ๑ ผ้าทิ้งไว้ที่ป่าช้า. ๒ ผู้อยู่ในป่าช้า. Sosanika. 1 A garment left in a cemetery. 2 A person living in a cemetery [For example I found ภิกษุโสสานิกะ, a monk].

หงส์. นกในนิยายถือว่าเป็นนกในตระกูลสูง มีเสียงไพเราะ เป็นพาหนะของพระพรหม. Hong. A legendary bird of noble lineage, his cry is melodious, and he serves as a vehicle to Brahma. [Has given his name to the swan in Thai language.]

หวอด. ฟองน้ำที่ปลาบางชนิดพ่นไว้สำหรับเก็บไข่. Wot. A nest of clustering bubbles that some species of fishes build by blowing in order to keep their eggs inside. [Known as fish foam.]

แหนง. พิธีทางไสยศาสตร์อย่างหนึ่งที่ทำให้ผู้หญิงไม่ได้แต่งงานตลอดไป. Neng. A black magic ceremony intended to prevent a woman from ever marrying.

เหรา. สัตว์ในนิยายมีรูปครึ่งนาคครึ่งมังกร. Hera. A legendary animal, half-naga half-dragon. [The naga is the famous legendary snake of South Asian lore.]

อนงค์. ผู้ไม่มีตัวตน เป็นชื่อกามเทพ เทวดาองค์นี้ถือธนูและศรทำด้วยดอกไม้. Anong. “Incorporeal being,” a name of Kam-Tep, the Love God, represented with a bow and arrows made of flowers.

อนันตริยกรรม. กรรมที่ให้ผลไม่เว้นระยะ คือ กรรมที่เป็นบาปหนักที่สุด มี ๕ อย่าง คือ ๑. ฆ่าบิดา ๒. ฆ่ามารดา ๓. ฆ่าพระอรหันต์ ๔. ทําให้พระกายพระพุทธเจ้าห้อเลือด ๕. ทําให้สงฆ์แตกแยกกัน. Anantriyakam. The five greatest sins, i.e. 1 to kill one’s father; 2 to kill one’s mother; 3 to kill a saint (arahant); 4 to bruise a Buddha’s body [not a common one, I guess]; 5 to make a monk break its vows.

อภิญญา. ความรู้อย่างสูง, ความรู้ยิ่งในพระพุทธศาสนามี ๖ อย่าง คือ ๑. อิทธิวิธิ แสดงฤทธิ์ได้ ๒. ทิพโสต หูทิพย์ ๓. เจโตปริยญาณ รู้จักกำหนดใจผู้อื่น ๔. ปุพเพนิวาสานุสติญาณ ระลึกชาติได้ ๕. ทิพจักขุ ตาทิพย์ ๖. อาสวักขยญาณ รู้จักทำอาสวะใ. อรหัน. ๑ ชื่อสัตว์ในนิยาย มี ๒ เท้า มีปีกคล้ายนก หัวคล้ายหัวคน. ๒ ผู้วิเศษ. Orahan. 1 A legendary animal having two feet, and wings, and a man-like face. 2 A wizard.

อัมพุชินี. สระบัว,หนองบัว. Ampuchini. A lotus pond.

โอปปาติกะ. ผู้เกิดผุดขึ้นโดยไม่ต้องอาศัยพ่อแม่ อาศัยอดีตกรรมได้แก่เทวดา พรหม สัตว์นรก เปรต อสุรกาย อุปปาติกะ ก็เรียก. Oppatika. Creatures born without the intervention of parents, and having no past karma; a name applied to devas, Brahma, hell beasts, evil spirits, and asuras. [Included in the devas are garudas and nagas, of which only some kinds, however, are born oppatika.]
