คนที่ไม่รู้จักระวังเวลา ถ้าไม่เป็นคนบ้า ก็เป็นพระอรหันต์.
Those who pay no attention to time, if they are not crazy, then they are Arahants [Enlightened].

ถ้าท่านทำงานเห็นแก่หน้า ท่านจะพบและเพิ่มปัญหาเรื่อยไป.
If you work selfishly, you will constantly face and accumulate problems.

ถ้าท่านดำเนินชีวิตขาดความพอดี ความเป็นหนี้ก็จะเข้ามาเพิ่มให้ท่าน.
If you live without moderation, debts will constantly accrue.

ถ้าท่านทำด้วยความหวังประโยชน์ทางจิต ท่านก็จะมีชีวิตอยู่ย่างสงบเย็นเป็นนิพพาน.
If you hope and look for mental benefit, your life will be as quiet as the Nirvana.

การโกรธคนอื่นเขา ก็เท่ากับจุดไฟเผาตัวเอง เสียก่อนแล้วตั้งนาน.
By being angry at others you are burning yourself away first and foremost.

อารมณ์ไม่พอกับตัณหา เวลาไม่พอกับความโง่ ความเป็นเปรตหิวโซก็เกิดขึ้น.
Heart left unfilled by passion, time left unfilled by silliness: state of the famished ghost arises. [The famished ghost is the preta; its state arising means one will become a preta in his or her next life, and/or lead a preta-like existence in one’s current life.]

ถ้าทำตัวเป็นผู้รับแต่ฝ่ายเดียว โลกนี้ก็จะไม่มีผู้ให้เหลืออยู่แม้แต่คนเดียว.
If you only make a grantee of yourself, there won’t remain a single giver in this world.

ถ้าทำบ้านให้แข็งแรงแน่นหนากว่ารากฐาน ไม่เท่าไรบ้านก็จะเดาหัวลง.
If you make the house stronger than its foundation, it will collapse in no time.

ถ้ามั่วสุมอยู่กับอบายมุข ไม่เท่าไรก็ต้องไปขลุกอยู่ในอบายได้ด้วยตนเอง.
If you get acquainted with vice, soon you will be absorbed in it wholly.

ถ้าอยากเป็นคนมีอำนาจ ก็อย่าใช้คำตวาดด่าทอเขา ให้อำนาจของเราร่อยหรอไป.
If you want authority, do not scold people, this makes authority wane.

ถ้าอยากเป็นคนเด่งคนดัง ก็ต้องเลิกหวังในความสงบ ซึ่งมันอยู่ด้วยกับไม่ได้.
If you want to be conspicuous, famous, leave all hopes of peace of mind, as both cannot go together.

การไม่ต่อสู้ในบางกรณี กลับเป็นวีรกรรมยิ่งกว่าการต่อสู้ย่างเอาเป็นเอาตาย.
Not fighting can sometimes be more courageous than fighting at one’s fiercest.

ระวัง! ความสงสารกลายเป็นความรักทางเพศได้ไม่ทันรู้ แล้วผลที่ตามมามันต่างกันมาก.
Beware! Compassion can turn into sexual desire without one’s realizing it, and the consequences are very different.

หญิงสาวก่อนแต่จะตัดสินใจรักเขา สังเกตให้มากกว่าเก่าอีก ๓ เท่า จึงจะปลอดภัย.
Before you love a girl, think not twice but thrice, for safety reasons.

อย่าเลือกของรักด้วยกิเลส แต่จงเลือกด้วยโพธิ คือสติปัญญาที่เป็นอิสระ ไม่ตกเป็นทาศของความรัก.
Don’t choose your love with lust but with awareness, for free intelligence does not fall a slave to love.

คนไม่ดี ที่จริงเขาก็อยากดีเหมือนกัน เพียงแต่เขาใจความไม่ดีว่าเป็นความดี อย่างกลับกันอยู่.
The bad person too wants to be good, however he or she sees bad as good and vice versa.

มีเงินก็มีอำนาจ มีอำนาจก็มีเงิน แต่ยังมีสิ่งประเสริฐอีกอย่างหนึ่ง ซึ่งอยู่เหนืออำนาจและเงิน แต่ไม่ค่อยมีใครรู้จัก.
With money comes power, with power comes money, yet there is something more excellent than power and money, but few know about it.

สอนตัวเองให้ได้เสียก่อน จึงค่อยสอนท่าน จะไม่เป็นครูบาอาจารย์ที่สกปรก.
I teach myself first before teaching you, in order to be a teacher worth the name.

การหลีกเลี่ยงเมื่อไม่มีหนทางสู้ นั่นก็คือการสู้อีกแบบหนึ่ง ซึ่งควรจะรู้จักไว้.
To avoid fighting when there is no way to fight is another way to fight that one ought to learn.

แม้จะมีเหรียญตราเต็มอก ก็รกเสียเปล่า ถ้าเขาไม่รู้จักรักศักดิ์ศรีของตนเอง แต่ก็ยังมีอยู่โดยมาก.
A breast full of medals, it is of no use if you don’t care about your honor. Yet many are like that.

ไม่มีอะไรน่าเกลียด เท่ากับการดัดจริตวางท่าทำให้น่ารัก, ชนิดตบตาผู้อื่น.
Nothing is so ugly as affecting to be charming in order to deceive others.

อาจหาญกับอาหาร ต่างฝ่ายต่างเป็นปัจจัยแก่กันและกัน สำคัญอยู่ที่ใช้มันให้ถูกต้อง.
Courage and food bring out each other, the important is to use each properly. [Plays on the likeness of words at-han, courage, and a-han, food. They symbolize heart/soul and body.]

ดูจากจำนวนคนทำบุญอยากไปสวรรค์ ถ้าจริงตามนั้น ไม่เท่าไรสวรรค์ก็จะแน่นอัด ยิ่งกว่าปลาซาร์ดีนในกระป๋อง.
Look how so many people make good deeds prescribed by rites to go to heaven; if they are sincere, in no time will heaven be more crowded than a sardine can.

คนเราต้องฉลาดแต่พอดี และในทางที่ถูกที่ควรเท่านั้น ที่จะเจริญและเอาตัวรอดได้, เรามักฉลาดกันจนเฟ้อ.
We must be intelligent in the right proportion and right direction in order to grow and survive, but usually we want to be too smart.

วันเวลาที่ท่านสามารถทำหน้าที่ของท่านได้ดีที่สุด นั่นแหละคือวันฤกษ์ดียามดีที่สุดสำหรับท่าน อย่าไปดูหมอให้เสียเวลา.
That day when you can do best is the most auspicious day for doing. Don’t waste your time with astrologers.

ข่าวตามหน้าหนังสือพิมพ์ ที่ถ่ายทอดกันมาผิดๆก็มีมาก ไม่น้อยกว่าข่าวลือ.
There is much fake news in the papers, no less than in rumors.

“ไม่ได้กิน” กับ “กินไม่ได้” นั้น มีอาการและความหมายต่างกันมาก แต่ก็มีผลเท่ากัน คือ ตายด้วยกัน.
“I didn’t eat” and “I can’t eat” have very different symptoms and meaning, yet they both have the same result, death.

ภายในครอบครัว มีความเป็นกันเองมากเกินไป จนความสุภาพเหลืออยู่น้อยที่สุด, ทำไมไม่สังเกต.
In the family casualness goes to such an extent there is hardly any rest of good manners, why don’t we notice?

เรากำลังมีแต่กีฬาที่ทำลายเศรษฐกิจ แต่ไม่มีกีฬาที่ช่วยเศรษฐกิจ, ซึ่งเพ้อฝันกันว่า เพื่อความมีน้ำใจนักกีฬาที่เพ้อฝัน.
We only have sports that destroy the economy and no sports that buttress the economy, while we fancy it develops fantastic fair play.

ความกล้าหาญของคนป่าเถื่อน มาจากความหวาดกลัวดังนั้น จึงมีความดุร้ายเข้าไปปนอยู่ด้วย.
Because the courage of savage people is born of fear, it is mixed with ferociousness.

สิ่งที่ต่างกันยิ่งกว่าฟ้ากับดินนั้นคือภาวะของ “คน” กับ “มนุษย์” : พวกหนึ่งเดินลง พวกหนึ่งเดินขึ้น.
More different than heaven and earth are “men” and “humans”: the ones go down, the others go up. [Uses two synonyms for mankind, kon and manoot, to designate things more apart than earth and sky. The next proverb develops the same idea.]

คนมีใจเดินลงต่ำ มนุษย์มีใจเดินขึ้นสูง แล้วจะไม่ต่างกันยิ่งกว่าฟ้าและดิน ซึ่งหยุดอยู่เฉยๆได้อย่างไร.
With a heart men go down low, with a heart humans go high up: how would they not be more different than heaven and earth, which always stay put?

แม้คูข้างถนน ก็อาจกลายเป็นเหวลึกของคนเมา หรือคนประมาทขึ้นมาเมื่อไรก็ได้, ดังนั้นอย่าประมาท.
The ditch on the roadside can be a chasm for the drunk or the reckless at any time, so don’t be reckless.

จำสิ่งที่ควรจำ ลืมสิ่งที่ควรลืม ทำสิ่งที่ควรทำ เลิกสิ่งที่ควรเลิก, มิฉะนั้น จะเป็นคนจมอยู่ในนรกตลอดเวลา.
Remember what is to remember, forget what is to forget, do what should be done, quit what should be quit, otherwise you’ll be drowned in a ceaseless hell.

คนทั่วไป สมัครใจจะเชื่อว่า ตายแล้วเกิดใหม่ โดยไม่ต้องการการพิสูจน์, ก็ยังดีกว่า เชื่อว่าตายแล้วสูญ.
In general people willingly believe in rebirth after death, without proof; it is better than believing that death is a disappearance.
