เพราะโง่งมงาย ทำดีมากมาย ก็จะกลายเป็นบาปสิ้น.
Because of silliness, most of the good you do turns into sin.

เพราะโง่งมงาย มรดกมากมาย ก็จะกลายเป็นขาดวิ่น.
Because of silliness, many inheritances are dissipated.

เพราะโง่งมงาย มั่งมีเหลือหลาย ก็ต้องกลายเป็นยาจกสิ้น.
Because of silliness, overabundant wealth will not prevent one’s ending a beggar.

ความงมงายของเขาเอง เป็นบ่อเกิดแห่งโชคร้าย ที่ทำให้ต้องประกอบพิธีทางไสยศาสตร์.
Ignorance is the very cause of the misfortune that impels him to recourse to superstitious ceremonies.

ความงมงาย เป็นบ่อเกิดแห่งโชคร้าย มิใช่ดวงดาว หรือเทพเจ้าผีสางที่ไหนมาดลบันดาล.
Ignorance is the cause of misfortune, not stars or gods somewhere who would provoke it.

ในโลกนี้ อะไรจะเป็นของสำคัญหรือไม่สำคัญ อยู่ที่การสมมติของมนุษย์.
In this world, what is important or not depends on humans’ assumptions.

ยิ้มแย้มกับแขก แต่แยกเขี้ยวกับภรรยาเมื่อลับหลังแขก อย่างกะเป็นยักษ์เป็นมาร.
To beam at your guest while you show your teeth to your wife in the guest’s back is to be an ogre and a devil.

ยิ่งเป็นผู้ใหญ่ ก็ยิ่งสนใจผู้น้อย นั่นแหละคือผู้ใหญ่ที่แท้จริงสมชื่อ.
The more elevated, the more attention one pays to humble folks. This is a truly elevated person.

ความสวยกินไม่ได้ แต่มันยิ่งกลายเป็นอาหารตา ที่แพงกว่าอาหารปาก.
Beauty is not for eating, yet it becomes food for the eye, more expensive than food for the stomach.

สวยตามธรรมชาติ นั้นประทับจิตสนิทใจ ยิ่งกว่าไฉไลด้วยวิทยาศาสตร์.
Natural beauty imprints itself deeper in the heart than studied allurement.

ความโง่อย่างงมงาย ไม่ร้ายเท่าความฉลาดอย่างงมงาย หรืองมงายสองชั้น ระวังให้ดีๆ.
Obdurate silliness is not as wicked as obdurate intelligence, which is doubly obstinate. Pay attention.

เสียใจก็กินเหล้า ดีใจก็กินเหล้า เฉยๆก็กินเหล้า นั้นคือผู้เตรียมตัวไปโลหกุมภี.
When sad he drinks, when happy he drinks, when neither sad nor happy he drinks: he is preparing to go to hell. [More precisely, to Loha-goompi, the hell’s pit with boiling cauldrons and frying pans.]

แร้ง สัญลักษณ์ใจบุญ นกยาง สัญลักษณ์ใจบาป ดังนั้น รูปร่างและสีสันมิใช่สัญลักษณ์อันแน่นอน.
The vulture is a symbol of benevolence, the heron a symbol of malevolence; therefore, shape and color are no clear signs.

ถ้าซื่ออย่างไม่ฉลาด ก็คือเซ่อ เหมือนคนละเมอเดินไปตกบันไดตาย.
Honesty without intelligence, it is like a sleepwalker in a staircase, falling and breaking his neck.

การกระทำของตนเอง ก็ยังมิได้ถูกใจตนเองเสมอไป นับประสาอะไร จากการกระทำของผู้อื่น.
Our own actions cannot always please us, let alone the actions of others.

เราล่วงเกินใครก็หวังเขาให้อภัย, ครั้นใครล่วงเกินเรา เราก็ลืมเรื่องการให้อภัย.
When we offend someone, we hope they will forgive us, but when someone offends us, we forget about forgiveness.

อย่าเชื่อคนสบถสาบานเร็ว เพราะเขาไม่รู้ว่า เขากำลังพูดอะไรออกไป เพราะใจของเขาไม่อยู่กะเนื้อกะตัว.
Believe not those who make oaths and promises quickly, because they don’t know what they’re saying, their mind is not with their body.

โบราณว่า รักกันไว้ดีกว่าชังระวังการ, ปลูกอื่นไยปลูกไมตรีดีกว่าพาล, แต่ไม่ค่อยมีใครเชื่อ.
Our forefathers already said love is better than hate, calling for harmony and friendship better than sowing seeds of discord, but still few believe it.

อย่าดูหมิ่นมุนีที่นั่งนิ่งๆอยู่ตรงหน้า จะเหมือนเล่นกับไฟฟ้าพันล้านโวลท์.
Don’t look down upon the holy man sitting quietly in front of you, this is playing with billion-volt electricity.

อยู่กลางทะเลใหญ่ อย่าไว้ใจลมเงียบ, บ้านเมืองเลียบเชียบก็ระวังคนถืออาวุธ.
On the high seas one does not trust the quiet wind; peaceful nations beware of gun-carrying people.

ระวังคนโกรธแล้วหัวเราะร่า ถ้ามิใช่คนบ้า ก็เป็นปีศาจจำแลง.
Beware of angry people who then start laughing cheerfully; if they’re not lunatics, then they’re disguised demons.

อยู่กลางทะเลใหญ่ อย่าไว้ใจทะเลสงบ เพราะมันอาจจะสยบเพื่อหลีกทางให้พายุ.
On the high seas trust not the quiet sea, as it may subdue to leave way for the storm.

ผู้ดีจอมปลอม ต้องมีอะไรมอมหน้า, พอเหงื่อออกมา ก็เห็นหน้าจอมปลอม.
Hypocrites must cover their face with camouflage make-up; when they sweat, one can see they’re fake.

คนชั่ว คอยแต่จะโฆษณาความชั่วของอื่น เพราะเขารู้จักแต่ความชั่วของผู้อื่น ไม่รู้จักความดีของใคร.
Wicked people are eager to publicize the wickedness of others because they are only familiar with wickedness, not knowing the good in people.

ความลับ ไปอยู่กับพวกคนเถิด อย่ามาอยู่กับพวกมนุษย์เลย มันไม่สมกัน.
Secrecy is consubstantial to all groupings: don’t join societies, it is not appropriate.

ฉลาดและไหวพริบ เหมือนอีกาก็ได้ แต่อย่าไปทำอะไรๆอย่างเดียวกับอีกาเลย.
Smart and resourceful like a crow, don’t do crows’ things.

คนหน้าตาเหี้ยมโหด มีโอกาสทำอันตรายเราน้อยกว่าคนที่หน้าตาสะสวย.
People with ruthless faces have less opportunity to harm us than people with pretty faces.

อย่าทำตนเป็นเปลือกกล้วยบนพื้นถนน เพียงเพื่อตนจะได้หัวเราะเยาะคนเหยียบแล้วล้ม, ตนเองน่าละอายกว่า.
Don’t make yourself the banana peel on the pavement upon which people tread and that makes them fall, just to laugh at them, because then yours is a greater shame.

การทำอะไรที่คนไม่เห็น ดีหรือชั่วตาม ให้ถือว่าเทวดาผีสางเห็น.
When you do something, good or bad, people don’t see, be assured that the devas see it.

ถ้าต้องเป็นทาส ก็จงเป็นทาสแต่ทางกาย อย่าให้กลายเป็นทาสทางสติปัญญา.
If you must be a slave, then be a slave through body only, don’t be a slave through mind.

ในโลกนี้ ความผิดบางอย่างไม่ใช่ความชั่วก็มี, และความถูกบางอย่าง ไม่ใช่ความดีก็มีได้เหมือนกัน.
In this world some wrong is not evil and some right is not good.

น้ำในมหาสมุทรจะแห้งไปหมด ก่อนความรู้ความคิดในหัวมนุษย์แห้งหมด.
The water of the ocean will dry up before knowledge and thought in man’s head can dry up.

กินเป็นก็สบาย กินไม่เป็นก็ตาย ทั้งสองความหมายล้วนแต่เป็นเรื่องของการกิน.
Eating brings well-being, eating not causes death, both meanings inhere in food.

เพื่อปกปิดความชั่วเพียงอย่างเดียว เขาก็ต้องทำความชั่วอีกหลายอย่าง, เปิดเผยมันเสียยังจะดีกว่า.
To conceal one evil he did, he must do more evil; it would be better to tell it.

โลกไม่อาจปราศจากสงคราม เพราะเป็นวิธีหาประโยชน์ของคนจำพวกหนึ่ง ซึ่งมีอยู่ในโลก.
The world cannot be free from war because war is the way one kind of people who live in this world make a profit.

มนุษย์ยุคนี้ ใช้เครื่องจักรกลและเทคโนโลยี จนไม่มีความเป็นมนุษย์ตามปกติเหลืออยู่แล้ว.
In this our time, man is using machines and technology so much so that no stock humanity is left.

แมวป่า หากินได้เองทุกเพรงกาล แต่พอมาเป็นแมวบ้าน ก็กลายเป็นแมวที่คนต้องเลี้ยง.
Wild cats are always capable of finding their food themselves, but when they become domestic cats, they turn into cats that people must feed.

เพื่อนตายหายาก ทั้งนี้ก็เพราะว่า คนส่วนมากไม่มีใครชอบตาย หรืออยากตาย มิใช่หรือ.
True friends are hard to find, because generally people don’t like to die or don’t want to die, do they? [A play on words, as “true friends” in Thai literally is “friends to death.”]

นกฮูก ไม่ออกหากินกลางวัน นั่นมิใช่เพราะมันฉลาด แต่เป็นเพราะลูกตาของมันไม่อำนวย.
The owl does not look for his food by day, not because he’s smart but because his eyes don’t allow it.

ความชั่ว จะมามั่วอยู่ที่ใคร ก็เพราะเขาพอใจต้อนรับมันเข้ามา, มิใช่มันจะมาเองได้.
Evilness comes when one welcomes it – not uninvited.
