สุภาษิตที่คิดได้เมื่อกำลังเมา อาจจะใช้ไม่ได้เมื่อหายเมา แม้กวีที่ขี้เมา ก็ยังมีเวลาที่สร่างเมา.
Proverbs that come up while drunk may not be used when sober. Alcoholic poets still have time to sober up.

จัดเป็นอมตภาษิต เพราะออกมาจากความจริงอันไม่รู้จักตาย.
Proverbs may be immortal because they come from the truth which knows not death.

ถ้าท่านทำใจร้อน ก็จะต้องร้อนใจในภายหลัง อย่างไม่มีทางหลีก.
Impatience will lead you into anxiety, inevitably.

ถ้าท่านเห็นแก่ได้ ท่านจะต้องสูญเสียสิ่งที่ได้แล้ว และสิ่งที่กำลังจะได้ข้างหน้า.
If you are greedy, you will lose what you already have and what you are about to get as well.

ถ้าท่านพุดพล่อยๆ ก็คือท่านเปิดรูรั่วให้เกียรติศุขของท่านค่อยๆรั่วจนหมดไป.
By talking thoughtlessly, you are opening a hole through which your good name leaks away.

ถ้าท่านสบายเมื่อหนุ่ม ท่านต้องรู้จักจัดรู้จักคุ้ม ให้สบายไปจนแก่.
If you had it easy while young, still you must learn to make things easy for you until old.

ถ้าท่านทำบาปแลกบุญ ต้องพิจารณาดูให้ดีเสียก่อนว่า มันจะคุ้มทุนได้อย่างไร และเมื่อไร.
If you sin for merit, you must consider carefully how it will get even and when.

ถ้าท่านทำตัวเห็นแก่ได้ ก็อย่าหวังน้ำใจจากเพื่อนฝูง.
Behaving selfishly, don’t expect goodwill from friends.

ถ้าท่านกลัวจนเกินไป ท่านก็ไม่มีทางทำอะไรได้สำเร็จ.
Too much fear will deprive you of all means to achieve anything.

ถ้าท่านกล้าจนเกินงาม ก็จะมีแต่พบกับความเดือดร้อน.
Unreasonably brave, you will only meet with hardships.

ถ้าท่านหวังแต่ความสนุก ก็จงเตรียมตัวสำหรับพบกับความทุกข์อย่างมหันต์.
If you look only for fun, prepare yourself for great suffering.

ถ้าท่านขาดความยั้งคิด ชีวิตทั้งชีวิตจะหมดความหมาย โดยไม่ทันรู้.
Without prudence [in the sense of phronesis, from Greek philosophy, that is, prudence as a kind of thinking] life loses its meaning unawares.

ถ้าท่านดำเนินชีวิตด้วยความพอดี ท่านก็จะไม่เป็นหนี้ตลอดกาล.
Moderation is the way not to be in debt forever.

ถ้าท่านมีเมตตากรุณา ท่านก็จะมีมิตรสหายญาติกาไปทั้งบ้าน.
With kindness and compassion, you’ll find friends in every place. [Kindness and compassion are two of the so-called four Pure Abodes of Buddhism, namely: loving kindness (metta), compassion (karuna), sympathetic joy (mudita), and equanimity (upekkha).]

ถ้าท่านมีเมตตาเกินประมาณ ก็จะพบคนอันธพาลไปทั่วบ้านทั่วเมือง.
If you are overbearing, you will be confronted by rogues everywhere.

ถ้าท่านคิดแต่ความหลัง ท่านก็รังจะพบแต่ความเศร้า.
If you only think of the past, you will only find sorrow.

ถ้าท่านมีแต่ความมัวเมา จะพบแต่ความปวดร้าวอย่างนิรันดร.
Obsession will cause you ceaseless pain.

ถ้าท่านรู้จักใช้เวลาให้ถูกต้อง ชีวิตก็จะมีค่าเป็นเงินเป็นทอง ยิ่งกว่าที่กำลังเป็นอยู่นี้.
If you know how to handle time, life will have so much more value than now.

กินอยู่เท่าที่มี ดีกว่าไปเป็นหนี้เขค เพื่อเอากินเติบ.
To eat as much as one has is better than getting into debt to eat a lot.

เป็นสุขในการงาน ดีกว่าสุขสำหรับอยู่ในบ่อน แต่มันก็ยากจะรู้จัก.
Contentment at one’s work is better than contentment from gambling, but it is hard to understand.

จะตำหนิติเตียนคน ก็ต้องดูอย่าให้ตนมีข้อควรตำหนีติเตียนอย่างเดียวกัน มันจะย้อนกลับมาหาตนก่อนไปหาเขา.
Before criticizing someone, examine if the criticism does not apply to you as well, because then it will reach you before reaching the other one.

อย่าทรยศขบถใคร เพราะทำไปก็เท่ากับทรยศขบถเกียรติของตนเอง.
Don’t betray anyone, as this is the same as betraying your own honor.

พอมีอำนาจราชศักดิ์ ก็มีโอกาสที่จะทุจริตได้ง่ายขึ้นอีกหลายเท่าตัว ต้องระวังให้ดี.
Whoever has royal power has many more occasions to be corrupt. Think about it.

ความกล้าหาญของคนมีสติสัมปชัญญะเท่านั้น ที่จะจัดเป็นวีรกรรมอันแท้จริง มิฉะนั้นก็เป็นเรื่องของคนบ้าบิ่น.
Only the courage of the mindful allows for true acts of heroism; the rest is foolhardiness.

ถ้าอยู่ในฐานะที่จะหลีกทางให้ไม่ได้จริงๆ ก๊จงยินดีเพชิญหน้ากับทุกสิ่ง ที่ประดังกันเข้ามา.
If you really cannot help it, then you ought to be happy with what comes about.

ถ้าท่านเหยียบงู ก็เท่ากับท่านทำให้มันรู้สึกว่า ท่านท้าทายให้มันกัดท่าน ดังนั้นระวังไว้ดีกว่า.
When you walk on a snake, it is like challenging him to bite you. Be careful.

หลีกทางให้เขา ก็คือหลีกทางให้เราพันจากอันตรายที่เกิดขึ้น ในที่สุดก็ได้รับผลดีร่วมกัน มิใช่หรือ?
To get out of someone’s way is to avoid possible danger and that is advantageous to both, isn’t it?

มีโมหะในทางความร่าเริง ดูจะดีกว่าในทางโศกเศร้า ดังนั้นควบคุมทิศทางของโมหะกันเสียบ้างเถิด.
Cheerful imaginations are better than sad ones; try to control the direction of your imagination. [Cheerful joy is one of the Buddhist Pure Abodes: see above.]

เพียงแต่คิดจะเป็นคนดีนั้นยังไม่พอ, ต้องพยายามเป็นคนดีให้ได้ด้วย จึงจะพอ.
Only thinking to be a good person is not enough, you should try to be one: that will be enough.

ถ้ามันเป็นสิ่งสกปรก ลามกไม่น่าดู ก็อย่าพยายามทำให้เป็นสิ่งที่น่าดู มันจะเปลืองเปล่าไปเสียทุกอย่าง.
If it’s something filthy, indecent, unsightly, don’t try to make it sightly, it’s a total waste of time.

คนบ้ากับคนเมา มีลักษณะเหมือนกันอยู่อย่างหนึ่ง คือประเดี๋ยวดีประเดี๋ยวร้าย.
Lunatics and drunk people have one thing in common: one moment they’re good and the other moment wicked.

สิ่งที่เราทุกคน จะต้องระมัดระวังกันอย่างที่สุด นั้นคือภาวะของความ “โง่เท่าเดิม”.
What each of us must be most cautious of is the state of being “as stupid as before.” [That is, not to learn from experience, but also to be as stupid as in one’s previous life.]

ระวัง! ตัวเองหลอกตัวเอง เสียหายกว่าผู้อื่นหลอก ตั้งร้อยเท่าพันเท่า, แต่ก็ไม่มีใครระวัง.
Beware! To deceive oneself is more harmful than being deceived by others, a hundred, a thousand times more. But no one is careful.

ผู้ที่ถูกจองจำในคุกในตะราง ก็มิได้เป็นคนผิดเสมอไปในชาตินี้ แต่ต้องคิดถึงชาติก่อนๆของเขาด้วย.
Not all convicts are bad people in this life, but one must consider their previous lives as well.

การแสดงบทบาทแห่งละครในสมาคมชั้นสูง ล้วนแต่เป็นผู้แสดงในระดับดาราด้วยกันทั้งนั้น.
In the drama performance of high society, all are actors of superstar level.

ไม้อ่อน เด็กอ่อน ดัดง่าย, ไม้แก่ เด็กแก่ ดัดยาก, ดังนั้น จึงควรดัดเสียแต่ยังอ่อน.
Young wood like young children is easy to bend, old wood like old children is hard to bend, one must bend it when it is young.

พ่อแม่รู้สึกเหมือนแผ่นดินไหว เมื่อได้ยินคำว่า “พ่อ” หรือ “แม่” ที่อ้อแอ้ออกมาเป็นครั้งแรกจากปากของลูก.
Parents feel like an earthquake when for the first time they hear their child babble “papa” or “mama.”

เพศผู้ มีอำนาจภายนอกเหนือเพศเมียเท่าไร เพศเมีย ก็มีอำนาจภายในเหนือเพศผู้เท่านั้น.
The more external power the male has over the female, the more inner power the female has over the male.

ความโศกเศร้า มิได้ทำให้ใครได้รับประโยชน์อะไร นอกจากทำให้ศัตรูของเขาดีใจ.
Our sorrow is of benefit to no one, except that it makes our enemies happy.

การปิดทองหลังพระ ได้บุญที่บริสุทธิ์แท้จริง ยิ่งกว่าปิดทองหน้าพระ และต่อหน้าคน.
To appose gold leaves on the back of a Buddha statue with pure intentions is so much better than to gild the face of the statue to the gallery. [An allusion to the merit-making practice of gilding holy statues with thin gold leaves in temples.]

อย่ากลัว! ถ้าท่านไม่สูบไม่ดื่ม ท่านก็จะหาพบสตรีที่ไม่สูบไม่ดื่ม.
Don’t worry! If you neither smoke nor drink, you’ll find a woman who neither smokes nor drinks.

สัตว์ มีความรัก ความโกรธ ความเกลียด ความกลัว อย่างผิวเผินยิ่งกว่าคน.
Animals have much more superficial feelings of love, anger, hate, and fear than humans.

พรุ่งนี้ มีไว้สำหรับแก้ไขข้อผิดพลาดของวันนี้ มิใช่เพื่อเสริมความผิดพลาดให้สมบูรณ์เต็มที่.
Tomorrow is for amending one’s mistakes, not for making the error complete.

หญิงหรือชายที่ผลายใจนั้น เขาใช้ทุกๆใจ เพื่อความพินาศของตนเอง มิใช่เพื่ออะไรอื่น, แต่เขาไม่รู้สึกตัว.
Those women or men who have a lover for everyday use all hearts for their own destruction, nothing else, but they’re unaware of the mistake.

ในกรณีทั่วไปพกหินดีกว่าพกนุ่น, ในกรณีแห่งการคุกรุ่น ก็พกนุ่นดีกว่าพกหิน.
In general, steadfastness is better than vacillation, but in case of anger vacillation is better than steadfastness. [The saying is, for the general case, “to carry a stone is better than to carry a kapok seed pod (which is soft and fluffy)”; it is the image used in this proverb, which presents an exception to the saying.]

การเป็นบรรพชิตหรือคฤหัสถ์ ยังมิใช่เครื่องวัดความมีธรรมะอันเชื่อถือได้.
To be a monk or layman, this is no reliable gauge of righteousness.

ปัจจัยแห่งความสำราญทีมีมากเกินประมาณ จะสร้างปัญหาใหม่ขึ้นมาอีก.
The source of too much happiness will create new problems of its own.

ความสุขสำราญที่ไม่มีธรรมะเป็นรากฐาน ก็คือความทุกข์ทรมานทีกำลังรอเวลาอยู่.
Delights which do not have righteousness as their foundation are torments in waiting.

ผู้กินอยู่แต่พอดี มีโอกาสที่จะเกิดความอารี แก่ผู้ที่ไม่มีอะไรจะกิน.
He who eats with moderation will have the opportunity to be generous with those who have nothing to eat.

ลมดี ทำให้เรือแล่นใบ พอกลายเป็นลมร้าย ลมนั้นก็จะคว่ำเรือลำนั้นเสีย.
The gentle wind that makes the boat sail forth, when it turns violent, will capsize the boat.

พ่อนั่นแหละคือไพรี แม่นั่นแหละคือศัตรู ถ้าเขาเลี้ยงดูลูกไม่ถูกทาง.
This father is a fiend, this mother an enemy, if they don’t bring up the child properly.

เมื่อเราพอใจในอันตรายที่มีเสน่ห์ฉาบบังไว้ จนเราหลงไปว่ามิใช่อันตราย หากแต่เป็นลาภเป็นผลอันพึงปรารถนา.
When we are pleased with hazards that blind us with their spells, it goes so far that we believe they are not dangers but the very fortune to be desired.

ตายไปโดยไม่มีความลับ ดีกว่ามีความลับติดตัวไป, เพราะเราไม่อาจตบตายมบาล.
To die without a secret is better than to bring secrets to your grave, because you cannot cheat Yama [judge of the departed].

ที่พูดว่า อย่าให้คนแปลกหน้าเข้ามาในบ้าน นั้นหมายความว่า อย่าให้กิเลสเข้ามาในจิต ต้องตีความกันให้ถูก.
When it says “don’t let strangers in your house,” it means you mustn’t let passions in your heart. Interpret correctly.

เห็นคนกินน้ำ เรารู้สึกอร่อยด้วยได้, ครั้งน้ำกินคน เราอร่อยด้วยไม่ได้, ยุติธรรมไหม?
When we see people drinking water, we can feel the delight ourselves, but when we see water taking people, we cannot feel delight: is it fair?

ความโง่เขลาของพลเมืองที่ไร้ศีลธรรม นั่นแหละทำลายชาติ หาใช่ศัตรูภายนอกไปเสียทั้งหมดไม่.
The clueless stupidity of citizens without morals is what destroys nations: don’t look for enemies outside.

รู้รักษาตัวรอดเป็นยอดดี นั่นมีได้ เฉพาะต่อเมื่อความรู้นั้นประกอบไปด้วยธรรม.
Knowing how to keep oneself alive is excellent only when such knowledge consists of dharma.

ดูหรือฟังได้ทุกอย่างไม่ห้าม แต่อย่าไปเห็นหรือได้ยินไปเสียทุกอย่าง.
Seeing or hearing is always permitted, but don’t go watch or listen to anything.

นักกายกรรมลำไม้สูงนั้น กลับลงมาถึงดินเมื่อไร ก็เท่ากับการได้เกิดไหม่เมื่อนั้น.
The acrobat with a long stick, when he touches the ground again, it’s like a new birth.

เป็นมนุษย์ แต่อาจจะคิดอย่างอมนุษย์ก็ได้ นั่นแหละคือความสามารถพิเศษของจิต.
He’s human but he can think like a non-human, here lies the special ability of the mind.

เมื่อต้องตกอยู่กลางป่า ก็จงดำรงตนให้เข้ากันได้กับกฎเกณฑ์ต่างๆนานาในป่านั้น.
When you must live in the middle of a forest, you should learn to live according to the various rules of this forest.

โลกนี้เป็นโรงละครอันแปลกหลาด ที่ตัวละครมีสิทธิ์แสดงบทบาทได้ตามใจตัว.
This world is a strange theater stage where the actors have the right to play their roles as they please.

บาปทั้งปวงที่ทำๆกันไว้ สักวันหนึ่งจะรวมตัวกันเป็นยักษ์ร้าย แล้วห้ำหั่นผู้ทำ.
All the sins committed, one day will cluster together to form a fierce ogre who will cut the sinner to pieces.

การเมืองบริสุทธิ์คือศีลธรรม เรามีแต่การเมืองระยำ คือการต่อสู้แย่งชิง.
Pure politics is morality, but we only have base politics, a tussle to snatch and grab.

ถ้าต่างคนต่างเห็นแก่ตัว ประโยชน์ก็จะขัดกัน จนต้องประหารกัน อย่างไม่มีทางที่จะหลีกเลี่ยง.
If all are selfish, interests will fight each other until complete destruction, this is inescapable.

การเมือง เรื่องจัดโลกให้มีสันติ โดยไม่ต้องใช้ศาสตรา ไยมาแข่งกันสร้างอาวุธบ้า เพื่อการจัดโลก?
Politics is the means to bring peace to the world, through not using the sword. Why this competition in making crazy weapons to administer the world?

ในพวกนักกีฬาแท้ คนแพ้ก็ไม่ถูกหัวเราะเยาะ คนชนะก็ไม่โลดเต้นให้ดูเป็นลิง.
Among real athletes, losers are not mocked, and winners do not dance with joy like monkeys.

ระวัง! ที่ดูน่ารัก อาจจะกัดเจ็บกว่าสิ่งที่ไม่ค่อยน่ารัก ก็เป็นได้.
Be careful! What looks good may snap at you more sharply than what doesn’t look so good.
